Wilpattu Safari & Stay
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's largest national park — a maze of natural lakes (villus), dense forest and open plains that is home to leopards, elephants and the elusive sloth bear. Lake 10 Resorts sits in Eluwankulama on the Mannar road, about one hour's drive from the park, on the quiet northern side that most visitors never discover.
Why stay on Wilpattu's quiet side
Most safari traffic funnels through the southern entrance near Anuradhapura road. Staying in Eluwankulama puts you on the calmer edge of the park: no queues of jeeps at dawn, no strip of loud hotels — just a working village, two lagoons full of birds, and the forest beyond. After a day of tracking leopards you come back to stillness, a swim, and dinner by the water.
How your safari works
- We arrange everything. A safari jeep with an experienced local driver costs Rs. 15,000 per vehicle (not per person), so a group or family shares one fee.
- Morning drives leave before dawn and are best for leopards and sloth bears near the villus. Afternoon drives catch elephants and birdlife in golden light.
- Park tickets are paid at the gate; we brief you on current entrance rates when you book so there are no surprises.
- Tell us your dates when you enquire and the jeep is confirmed alongside your room — one WhatsApp conversation covers the whole plan.
What you might see
Wilpattu's signature sighting is the Sri Lankan leopard, often resting near water in the dry months. Elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, wild boar, mugger crocodiles and hundreds of bird species share the park. Sightings are never guaranteed — that is the point of wild places — but the villus concentrate animals in a way few parks can match.
Make it a full nature stay
A safari day pairs naturally with everything on our doorstep: bird watching on the Upparu lagoon at dawn, a free kayak before breakfast, or a boat ride through the mangroves at sunset. Planning more than a night? See our 3-day Wilpattu itinerary, and check the best months to visit before you book.
