3-Day Wilpattu Itinerary

Three days is the sweet spot here: long enough for the park, the lagoons and the village to each get their moment, short enough to fit any Sri Lanka route. This is the plan we'd build for a friend.

Day 1 — Arrive and slow down

  • Afternoon: arrive (check-in from 2:00 pm — see routes to Eluwankulama), swim, walk the lagoon edge.
  • Golden hour: take the free kayaks out while the water turns to glass.
  • Evening: dinner by the water; confirm tomorrow's jeep over dessert. Then stars — this far from city light, they show off.

Day 2 — Wilpattu

  • Before dawn: your safari jeep (Rs. 15,000 per vehicle) rolls toward the park — about an hour of waking landscape.
  • Morning drive: villus, forest, and with luck a leopard at the water's edge or a sloth bear in the palu trees.
  • Afternoon: pool, nap, book in hand — the tropics' finest itinerary item.
  • Sunset: a boat ride (Rs. 5,000 per group) into the mangroves as the lagoon goes brass.

Day 3 — The village and the water

  • Dawn: bird watching on foot or by kayak — migratory season (Nov–Mar) doubles the cast.
  • Morning: free bikes for the village and paddy loop — temple, tank, and a hundred hellos.
  • Afternoon: check-out is 11:00 am, but late departures can linger over lunch (meals on request, Rs. 3,500 pp/day) before the road.

The 4-day upgrade

In season (roughly November–April), add a dawn run to Kalpitiya — spinner dolphins by the hundred, back for a farewell swim.
