Kalpitiya Dolphin Watching

Off the Kalpitiya peninsula, spinner dolphins travel in pods that can number in the hundreds — one of Sri Lanka's great wildlife spectacles, and it's a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from Lake 10. The season

The dolphin boats run in the calm-sea months, roughly November to April. Sightings of spinners on a fair-weather morning are close to routine. Outside these months the sea gets rough and boats stay in — plan accordingly.

Whale watching off Kalpitiya

Kalpitiya is quietly one of Sri Lanka's better whale watching grounds. Sperm whales are recorded through the season — sometimes in social groups — and blue whales pass the deep water beyond the reef edge. Unlike the crowded whale fleets of the south coast, boats here are few and mornings feel like your own expedition. Whales are a bonus on any dolphin trip rather than a promise: go for the spinners, and treat a blow on the horizon as the sea's tip.

How the day works from Lake 10

• Early start: boats go out in the morning calm, so you'll leave the resort before dawn with a packed breakfast if you like.
• On the water: a couple of hours among the pods — spinners bow-ride and leap; keep the camera on burst.
• Back by afternoon: in time for a swim, a sunset boat ride on our own lagoon, or simple stillness.
