Eluwankulama Travel Guide

Eluwankulama is a working village on the Mannar road in Puttalam District, at the north-western edge of Wilpattu National Park. There is no tourist strip here — there are paddy fields, fishing boats on the lagoon, a village tank, and one of the quietest corners of Sri Lanka you can still reach on a good road.

Getting here

  • From Colombo / the airport: take the Puttalam road (A3) north, then continue on the Mannar road (A32) past Puttalam town. Allow around 4 hours from the airport by car. We arrange airport transfers for Rs. 12,000 per trip if you'd rather not self-drive.
  • From Negombo: the same coastal route, roughly 3.5 hours.
  • From Anuradhapura: cross-country via Nochchiyagama, around 1.5–2 hours — an easy link if you're touring the Cultural Triangle.
  • By bus: Puttalam–Mannar buses pass through Eluwankulama; tell the conductor "Lake 10" and locals will point the way.

Why the northern side of Wilpattu

Most Wilpattu visitors stay near the southern entrance, where the hotels cluster. The north is different: fewer vehicles at the gate, wilder scenery on the drive, and villages that still live at their own pace. Staying here means your safari starts calm and ends calm — and between drives you have the lagoons, kayaks and village lanes to yourself.

Practicalities

  • Cash & fuel: Puttalam town (about 30–40 minutes south) has banks, ATMs and fuel stations; carry cash for small village purchases.
  • Shops: the village covers daily basics; anything specialist, buy in Puttalam on the way up.
  • Connectivity: Lake 10 has fibre internet — working remotely for a few days is genuinely comfortable.
  • Day trips: Wilpattu (1 hour), Kalpitiya's dolphins (1.5–2 hours), Anuradhapura's ancient city (about 2 hours).
